Not Just Coffee

As a college student, there are a few things you CANNOT live without. Ramen noodles, Netflix, good procrastination/study buddies, and arguably the most important, COFFEE. Coffee is one of the best things to happen to college students (probably right up there with snow days and classes that have 0 attendance policies).

However, coffee has been around way longer than college students (and the majority of TFC professors) have been alive. The earliest record we have of coffee drinkers comes from around 800 AD, when Ethiopian shepherds noticed that after eating coffee berries (yes, coffee trees produce berries!) their goats would begin to dance energetically. A local monk tried boiling some in water, and we’ve had caffeine cravers ever since.

There are so many unique components of coffee that make it a great drink. From the darkness of the roast, to the method of brewing, coffee can be customized to an innumerable amount of individual preferences. Once you graduate past Keurig Cups and classic pots (although there’s nothing wrong with these), even the methods of making coffee are fun to attempt. Two methods that all beginners should try are French presses and pour overs!

For those of you who don’t like drinking “bitter dirt water,” there are so many different types of coffee drinks now (lattes, frappuccino’s, and the like) that you don’t even need to like the taste of coffee to “like coffee.”

From its history, to the many different ways to make it, to the vast range of drinks you can make with it, coffee is a classic drink. But the best thing about coffee, has nothing to do with the drink itself. The best thing about coffee is the community that can come along with it. Coffee is the perfect excuse to get together with people. You can catch up with old friends over a cup o’ Joe. You can share a pot or two (or three) with your roommate as the two of you pull all-nighters during finals week. And asking someone to go get coffee is ALWAYS a great first date idea.

This April, Toccoa Falls College is going to have its second ever student-run coffee shop on campus, and it is going to be great! Having another spot to hang out, relax and drink good coffee will be great for TFC community. Coffee might just be that thing you drink in the morning to keep from falling asleep in your 8:30 a.m. class, but hopefully you begin to realize that coffee can be so much more than that. Because after all, it’s not just coffee.
